WHAT YOU CAN DO
Violence Domestic violence is not physical violence alone. Domestic violence is any behavior the purpose of which is to gain power and control over a spouse, partner or family member.
Abuse is a learned behavior; it is not caused by anger, mental problems, drugs or alcohol, or other common excuses. A few of the most common ways abusers control victims is with isolation, emotional abuse, using children, dominating finances, controlling family resources, physical and sexual assault.
Who are victims? Anybody can be a victim — rich or poor, any race, age, or religion. High school drop-out or Ph.D. Studies have shown no characteristic link between personality type and being a victim.
To help a friend really listen to their story, hold what you are told in confidence. Encourage your friend to think about safety. Help your friend make concrete plans that deal with the most likely "what ifs." Reach out to a domestic violence program.Sexual and domestic violence happen every day in California. . . to young people and older adults, to people with low incomes and high incomes, to women, men and transgendered persons, to heterosexuals and gay men and lesbians, to documented citizens and immigrants, to people of every faith, to people of every ethnicity, to those who are incarcerated and those who are free . . . and the first place people turn is to a friend or family member. Call your local domestic violence or sexual assault program to learn about their volunteer needs
Raise awareness in your own profession, organization, family and friendship circles
Educate yourself
Donate time, money, other resources, special skills
Become involved in political/social action which promotes victim rights and offender accountability
Be there for a friend who may be a victim or perpetrator; learn how to intervene or refer effectively to helping networks
Be a vocal proponent of services for victims in your community.
Teach respect and non-violence to the young people in your life - especially by being a good role model of those values.
